Let’s look back at some of the more significant and long-term attempts to overhaul Spiderman costumes, and how well those costumes stand the test of time.
1.The Black Spiderman Costume: First Appearance: Secret Wars #8 (1984)
Spidey wore this suit for a number of years as the '80s wore on, eventually discovering it was a living symbiote attempting to permanently bond with him. But even after ditching the symbiote and inadvertently creating Venom, Peter continued to wear a spandex version of the black costume for a while longer.
2.Spider-Man 2099: First Appearance: Spider-Man 2099 #1 (1992)
Miguel O'Hara was a darker, meaner Spider-Man for a darker, meaner Marvel Universe. His costume was adjusted accordingly. Miguel's suit was mostly blue, with a series of red shapes creating the image of some futuristic, deathly spider across his chest and face. A series of spiked talons and a cape of tattered webbing cemented the harsh new look.
3.The Scarlet Spider: First Appearance: Web of Spider-Man #117 (1994)
The Scarlet Spider wore a simple red bodysuit with white lenses. Over the suit was a ragged, sleeveless, blue hoodie and a spider emblem emblazoned on the chest. It was a poor man's version of the Spider-Man costume, and intentionally so.
4.The New Spider-Man: First Appearance: Sensational Spider-Man Vol. 1 #0 (1995)
Once the Clone Saga entered that infamous phase where Ben Reilly replaced Peter Parker for a time, Reilly was due for a wardrobe upgrade. The Scarlet Spider suit and its ragged hoodie were swapped out for something a little more reminiscent of Peter's costume. Aside from the external web shooters and the larger spider emblem, the biggest change came to the balance of red and blue areas. The torso was now completely covered in red, while the boots and gloves became stylistically fragmented. This costume died with Reilly himself, but it's worth noting that it seems to have at least partially inspired the look of Andrew Garfield's costume in the new Amazing Spider-Man movie.
5.The Iron Spider: First Appearance: Amazing Spider-Man #529 (2006)
The Iron Spider costume offered Peter protective armor, extra robotic limbs, camouflage, and a host of useful gadgets. Visually, it was very similar to the Black Costume, with a large spider emblem dominating an otherwise uniform bodysuit. The main difference was the color scheme. Rather than sign his work the traditional way, Tony forced Peter to wear the Iron Man colors of red and gold.
6.The Stealth Suit: First Appearance: Amazing Spider-Man #650 (2010)
At first glance, the stealth suit looks like Spider-Man's attempt at Tron cosplay. The basic design is once again similar to the Black Costume, only a bit more angular. The spider emblem and lenses light up to denote the suit's particular function. When they glow green, Spidey becomes invisible. When they glow orange, he becomes immune to sonic waves.
7.FF Spidey : First Appearance: FF #1 (2011)
Spidey joined the team just as the Fantastic Four morphed into the Future Foundation. Gone were the familiar blue suits, replaced by batch of white and black uniforms. Spidey's suit looked like nothing if not a reversed version of the Black Costume. A series of black strips running down either side helped differentiate the suit to some extent. The suit could also mimic his other costumes, ensuring that Spidey would never again have to worry about wearing the right outfit to his 19 different superhero team affiliations.
8.The New Ultimate Spider-Man: First Appearance: Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man #5 (2011)
Ultimate Peter Parker's costume was more or less identical to the original, and thus not worth mentioning here. It was only when the Spider-Man mantle passed to Miles Morales last year that the Ultimate costume took on an identity of its own. Unlike almost every alternate Spider-Man costume, this new suit retained the webbing. It was dominated mostly by black and accentuated by red webbing and white eye lenses. In terms of color and shape, it was a take that was both startlingly different and comfortably familiar at once.
